Puff pastry breadsticks with cheese and herbs

I like to have a little crunch with my salads, some herbs, and maybe a nice toss of grated hard cheese. Both romano and  parmesan are good choices for adding flavor to breadsticks.

These breadstick are quick and easy. They usually take about twenty minutes to prepare and twelve minutes to bake. Anyone can do it!  The ingredients are simple and found at most grocery stores.

I use a store brand frozen puff pastry dough.. I know, I know there is nothing like pastry dough made from scratch with layers of glorious butter and dough….

But for ease and convenience I am going to cheat a little today.

I like to roll my dough out into a nice 10 x 12 rectangle,  brush the dough with an egg wash and add the magic toppings. For today’s sticks I am using  parmesan cheese, fresh cracked black pepper, garlic salt, chives and basil.

breadsticks with herbs and cheese

Yummy…herb and cheese breadsticks!

As soon as I finish topping the pastry dough, I  cut 12, one inch strips and twist the strips into eye appealing bread sticks.  After each strip is twisted and placed on my baking sheet, I pop them into the oven bake them  for a few minutes.

Waiting is the hardest part. The kitchen starts to smell like melting cheese and herbs and it seems like an eternity before they will be ready to serve.

Once they are finished baking these quick cheesy herb breadsticks are the perfect match for a cool gazpacho or  caesar salad.  They make a nice snack on their own too!

Here’s the recipe….

Puff pastry bread sticks with cheese and herbs

1 sheet of store brand puff pastry

1 egg, beaten

5 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated

1/2 tsp garlic salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tbsp fresh chopped chives

1 tbsp fresh chopped basil

parchment paper

Pre heat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a 10 x 12 piece pf parchment paper.

On a floured surface roll out one sheet of chilled puff pastry to about 10 x 12 inches. In a small bowl mix the cheese and herbs together. Using a pastry brush, brush the surface of the dough with a beaten egg.  Now sprinkle your cheese mix evenly on top of the dough. Cut the dough into strip 1 inch x 12 inches long. gently twist each strip 9 or 10 times to form a straw like tube. the herbs should be twisted to the inside of the bread stick.

Place each stick on the prepared baking sheet, sprinkle sticks with additional cheese if you like. Place in the oven and bake for 12 – 15 minutes or until golden brown. About halfway through the cooking process be sure flip the breadsticks over for even browning.

your breadsticks should be crisp, solid and golden when you remove them from the oven. Cool on a wire rack.

Serve alone or with your favorite meal…
